Herpes Zoster or shingles represents the reactivation of the chickenpox virus on the skin and the sensitive nerves. Crops of blisters follow a linear pattern on the trunk, extremities or the face. The skin rash can be very painful, especially in patients older than 50 years old. It normally takes 2 to 4 weeks to heal up. When the pain persists after the resolution of the skin rash, it is called post herpetic neuralgia. Treatment consists of astringent soakings, pain control tablets and antiviral drugs such as Aciclovir.
