Keratoacanthomas (KA) are rapidly enlarging tumours that arise in sun-damaged skin of elderly patients. They typically progress in a few weeks to reach considerable size (2 cm on average). After a few more months, the lesion self-regresses. Surgery is commonly required as KA can be confused on examination with proper skin cancer.

Herpes Simplex (HS) is a viral infection characterized by a small collection of minute blisters, which easily burst and leave an eroded area that will transform into a scab. It is also known as Cold Sores and it is a self-healing process that takes around 7 to 10 days to disappear. Lips are most frequently affected but cheeks, eyelids, fingers, genitalia and virtually any part of the skin can be involved. HS is rather painful and relapses are common. Treatment is seldom necessary but astringent soaks and antiviral drugs such as aciclovir can be used.

Folliculitis decalvans (FD) is a chronic skin condition where hair follicles become inflamed and eventually destroyed. Patients complain of redness, tenderness and pustules that end up leaving a patched scar on the scalp.
The cause is unknown and treatment may be disappointing. Oral antibiotics, oral isotretinoin and local or oral steroids are available to ease the condition.
